The President of the Royal Northern College of Music, the world-famous bass-baritone Sir Willard White, presented An Enchanted Evening of Song at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester to mark the College’s 40th anniversary. The guest of honour was Katharine, Duchess of Kent, who was the College’s first President, serving for 35 years before Sir Willard’s appointment in 2008.

The concert was the highlight of a season of 40th anniversary events presented by the RNCM in Manchester and London. Sir Willard was joined by four recent alumnae Elizabeth Karani (soprano), Kathryn Rudge (mezzo-soprano), Jennifer Rust (soprano) and Helen Sherman (mezzo-soprano) who are now in great demand by opera companies in the UK and Europe.

At a post-concert reception, RNCM Principal, Professor Linda Merrick, paid tribute to the Duchess’s dedication to music and the College, confirming her appointment as Emeritus President at the RNCM. Professor Merrick took the opportunity to announce the RNCM’s ambitious future building plans and thanked those who attended for their support. The evening raised in excess of £20,000 for the RNCM’s Concert Hall Campaign.
