Exhibition on now until Bank Holiday Monday 28 March 2016 | Main Gallery, Mezzanine Gallery and Terrace Art Space

Looking for places to visit? The Lighthouse continues to build a strong name for contemporary visual art. Following the very successful show in 2014, Stephen Bishop has been invited to hold a new solo exhibition called “Circumference”.

Expect colour, texture and emotion as the artist explores circular shapes that correspond to his unique vision and sense of place. Stephen said: “The title relates to the new series of paintings from 2016 which use circular forms, both as an outward shape and inner subject matter. The colour circle and light continues to be fertile subjects. Light and colour are employed to explore emotional and spiritual content. The figurative works often have symbolic meaning. One feature of this exhibition is the increased number of abstract works. It is a sign that I am being pulled towards a heightened and perhaps purer form. There has also been conscious move to work from memory more often. The quotes I have used in the exhibition have a relevance to the way I feel about the act of creative painting. I hope that you enjoy the exhibition.”

Exhibition quotes

• “Light is a thing that cannot be reproduced, but must be represented by something else – by colour.” - Paul Cezanne

• “A picture must possess a real power to generate light and for a long time now I’ve been conscious of expressing myself through light or rather in light.” - Henri Matisse

• “The modern artist is working with space and time, and expressing his feelings rather than illustrating. I don’t paint nature. I am nature. Painting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.” - Jackson Pollock

• “The artist vocation is to send light into the human heart.” - Robert Schumann
