This charming picture of a squirrel at Dunham Massey has taken top prize in our annual readers’ photographic competition.

It was taken by Jayne Jones of Grappenhall and our panel of judges selected it from the hundreds of entries which were uploaded to our website since the competition was launched in April.

Jayne’s prize is a Fuji Film X100T camera worth £796 provided by competition sponsors Wilkinson’s Cameras.

Mum-of-two Jayne has owned a camera since she was a child, but said: ‘I’ve only really understood what I’m doing with my camera in the last few months. I’ve had a digital for years but always left it on Auto because I didn’t know what the other settings were.

‘Last November someone posted on a Facebook page saying that they were going to take pictures of fireworks and asking if anyone wanted to go along. I said I did, but that I didn’t know how to use my camera properly. When I was there, they started showing me how the different settings worked and by about March I’d got the hang of it.’

The 50-year-old’s winning shot was taken around that time at Dunham Massey, but it might not have happened if her son hadn’t had a headache.

‘I took him in to school late because he was unwell in the morning, and I stopped off at Dunham Massey on my way home to take pictures of the bluebells. I wasn’t happy with any of the shots I’d taken but then I noticed a squirrel watching me. I quickly swapped lenses and snapped him and he scampered away.’

The panel of judges included David Parkinson from Wilkinson’s Cameras and Cheshire Life editor Louise Allen-Taylor and they chose this shot of a glorious sunset at Culcheth by Ian Fletcher from Culcheth to win the second prize of a Wilkinson Camera voucher worth £150.

The third prize of a £100 Wilkinson Camera voucher went to Chris Heapy of Macclesfield for his picture of the sun shining through the trees in Macclesfield Forest.
