‘By a moonlit lake, a grieving prince witnesses the transformation of a swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled by an evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she can only be saved by the power of love.’
Carlos Acosta's Birmingham Royal Ballet open 2020 with a major tour of the Company's spectacular production of Swan Lake, created for them by the master of British classical ballet, Sir Peter Wright, the genius behind many of The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet's world-class productions, such as The Nutcracker.
After opening the tour in Southampton, and a two-week season at Birmingham Hippodrome, Swan Lake arrives at The Lowry on 4 March for just six performances over four days.
Swan Lake provides the perfect showcase for the artistry of Birmingham Royal Ballet's dancers and orchestra. The lead ballerina twin role of Odette (the enchanted White Swan) and Odile (the evil magician Baron von Rothbart's daughter, magically transformed to look like Odette by her father) is one of the most challenging roles of all time, encompassing romantic duets (pas de deux) and sparkling feats of technical dancing, such as the breathtaking 32 fouettés (quick, whipping turns whilst balanced on one leg) that are legendary amongst ballet lovers.
The corps de ballet feature in beautiful lakeside scenes, rising from the mist in one of the most magical moments of the production, and in the contrasting court scenes which feature showpiece solos for many.
The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet's resident orchestra, is world-renowned frequently playing for The Royal Ballet in London and international guest companies when they tour to the UK. Tchaikovsky's legendary score for Swan Lake is one of the most powerful pieces of ballet music ever composed, and will be really familiar to all through its use in films and advertisements.
Live music and dance combine to make a visit to The Lowry to watch Birmingham Royal Ballet a truly unforgettable experience. Given a five star review and described as 'first rate; unpretentious yet beautifully artistic. It's entertainment at its most sophisticated, offering something for everyone.' by the Manchester Evening News, this atmospheric, romantic and beautiful production of Swan Lake is not to missed.
