Children requiring specialist care were given the freedom of Blackpool Pleasure Beach for the day. The event was organised by The Lord’s and Ladies’ Taverners, a charity set up to help disadvantaged children, and the Thompson family, owners of the complex.

Fun-park characters in costume greeted the children as they arrived in mini-buses with their carers and they enjoyed a magic show, fish and chips and ice cream followed by free rides for the day.

Lady Taverner Barbara Thompson has been running the fun day for over 20 years with the support, in more recent times, of her daughter-in-law, Stina. The Taverners attending the day were Simon Lee Jones, the north west chairman, Tina Walker, who is chairwoman for Lady Taverners in Lancashire, along with treasurer Cheryl Burke and committee member Jacqui Bury.
