With world renowned explorers and famous ecologists having made it home – it's no wonder Selborne is a Site of Special Scientific Interest

Selborne is a quaint village just south of Alton. Surrounded by beautiful countryside the village's flora and fauna was immortalised in the English classic The History and Antiques of Selborne (1789). It is busting with history and has good communication links with the A3, M3, A31 and A27 nearby.

Most noted for...Being the home of 18th century naturalist Gilbert White who is noted as the first ecologist.

White washHome of the famous naturalist Reverend Gilbert White, the House and Museum commemorates the exploration of the natural world and gives an insight to Captain Lawrence Oates’s adventures. Why not explore the 18th century house or stroll around the pleasant gardens?

Potty about pottery Established in 1985, Selborne Pottery (01420 511413) creates and sells a range of decorated stoneware pottery. Each piece is hand thrown and turned on a wheel, no industrial techniques or moulds are employed. Grab yourself a decorative item to adorn your home.

Apples & pears Fruit enthusiasts should head to Blackmoor Estate (01420 476003). This family-run fruit farm has one of the widest selections of varieties in the country – offering 75 different types. There is even a farm shop where you can buy some of its top quality fruit, vegetables and cakes. Take the educational tour and find out which fruit is in season and how to grown your own.
