This month our food writers Richard Dash and Jamie Carter, from Lost in Cheshire, have some delicious ideas for a Mother’s Day treat
Last week we popped a poll up on our social media to find out what mums really want for Mother’s Day. The resounding response? Time with YOU! Closely followed by a bunch of flowers and a glass of wine… So, stop flicking through the Argos catalogue for something new and shiny for mum. Instead, here’s a little inspo for you to head online and get your tables booked for an afternoon tea or a Sunday roast… Or both, we’re not judging here.
Palm Court, Chester
Indulge in a quintessential British tradition and take afternoon tea at the Palm Court, at The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel, near Chester.
You can enjoy a freshly-prepared selection of finely-cut sandwiches, handmade scones with Cornish clotted cream (my fave, and not because I’m Cornish, promise) and homemade preserves. Followed by a delectable and delicate array of meticulously prepared pastries and teacakes.
Get excited, because they have an extensive selection of loose-leaf teas (including their own signature Palm Court blend), or add some sparkle to the occasion with a glass of Laurent-Perrier, or an exclusive Laurent-Perrier cocktail.
Afternoon tea at Palm Court is a unique experience. The sounds of their bubbling fountains and baby grand piano will gently rock you into your afternoon in their breath-taking garden room restaurant. This is a visit that mum will remember for a long time!

Suburban Green, Wilmslow
Wilmslow’s favourite urban retreat are throwing everything at Mother’s Day this year; indeed, they’re actually making a weekend of it. On Saturday they’re holding a Bottomless Afternoon Tea, so if you’re hoping to bend mum's ear about that loan you’ve been after, Saturday’s the day (just joking, of course!). The Bottomless afternoon tea is however very limited.
We’ve been told they already have bookings before its hit social media, so our fingers are crossed for you. If you’re after a little more of a traditional day out with Mum, their Sunday Roast is absolutely outstanding and the team will be giving all of the mums their very own bunch of daffodils. Awww! If none of the above suits, how about a gift voucher and a bottle of rosé?
Mottram Hall, Mottram St. Andrews.
A steadfast favourite of the Cheshire social scene, afternoon tea at Mottram Hall has retained its popularity ever since the hotel opened its doors in 1940. If you’re looking for a finer take on your afternoon tea, you won’t go wrong with Mottram Hall! We recommend you indulge in something deeply pampering in the spa, first, to really make an occasion of it.
After your afternoon of the finest treatments that Mottram has to offer, let the team spoil you and mum with a homemade selection of freshly cut finger sandwiches and warm scones smothered in jam and clotted cream. Plus, you’ll be able to choose from an exceptional range of speciality leaf teas or coffees. Alternatively, their champagne afternoon tea will put a sparkle on any day, not just Mother’s Day!

Shrigley Hall, Macclesfield
Maybe you’d like to clean out the cobwebs and take mum on a walk through the Peak District? As the UK’s top visited National Park, it’s not just us that raves about it. Personally, we love the Mam Tor walk. It’s accessible, has a car park nearby (and usually a coffee van too), and isn’t too tough to get to the top.
Once you’ve accomplished this very impressive hike together, hop in the car and head to nearby Shrigley Hall for a well-earned dip in the spa and sparkling afternoon tea. Don’t worry if you have one too many, they have plenty of rooms available. Jamie and I took our dog Lola for an overnight trip a short time ago and had a wonderful stay. You can usually pick up a deal on their website too.
