24 HOURS IN BUXTON

Morning

England’s highest market town is great to explore on foot. Enjoy breakfast – Eat at No.5 and The Herb Garden Vegetarian Bistro two of many mouth-watering options – and then make your way to Spring Gardens in Lower Buxton where you’ll find a vast array of wonderful independent stores set against stunning architecture.

The retail therapy continues in Higher Buxton, where a trip uphill will be rewarded with quirky bookstores and traditional stores.

No wander around Buxton is complete without a trip to St. Ann’s Well, an ancient natural spring and drinking well found at the foot of The Slopes, opposite the Crescent.

This has been a source of water in the town since Roman times and remains and was revered for its perceived healing properties and qualities.

Afternoon

Enjoy a spot of lunch at the Old Hall, reputedly the oldest hotel in England. Mary Queen of Scots spent time here whilst ‘taking the waters’ and a plaque on the entrance commemorates her stay.

In room 26 there is even an inscription on a window pane believed to have been inscribed by Mary herself. It reads: ‘Buxton, whose warm waters have made thy name famous, perchance I shall visit thee no more – Farewell.’

From here, you’re a stone’s throw from the beautiful Victorian Pavilion Gardens which showcases Buxton in all its glory.

This landscaped public park is wonderful – as is the architecture. Sit by the River Wye, take the miniature train, explore the bandstand, grab an ice-cream, take a stroll and enjoy the playground… there’s so much to see and do.

Evening

Take in a show at the famous Buxton Opera House and immerse yourself in the beauty of this Frank Matcham-inspired theatre.

If you’re wanting to extend the evening, why not enjoy a post-performance cocktail and maybe even a bite to eat at the atmospheric Old Clubhouse just across the road.

There are many hotel and B&B options for an overnight stay – including the nearby Palace Hotel Buxton and Spa, whilst the lavish and historic newly renovated Grade I listed Buxton Crescent Spa Hotel is just a short walk from the theatre.

For complete R&R, Buxton Crescent even offer a specific ‘Relaxation Package’ to ensure your 24 hours in Buxton is not just a whole lot of fun, but restorative and blissful too.
