For our 95th anniversary edition, we asked seven of Derbyshire’s most prominent photographers – all of whom have a connection to the magazine – to share their favourite photo of our county.
Chrome Hill (Image: Lee Howdle)
Chrome Hill is an amazing place and I’ve witnessed some incredible sunrises from this location. On this day, a rainbow perfectly framed over Parkhouse Hill and the tree on Chrome. I had to withstand the torrential rain, thunder and lightning but it was absolutely worth it.

Belper’s East Mill (Image: Ashley Franklin)
Belper’s East Mill is a majestic monumental reminder of the way Jedidiah Strutt turned a small settlement into one of the world’s first industrial mill towns. I like to think that, as a local resident, my 15 years at Derbyshire Life helped put Belper and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site on the map.

Thorpe Cloud. (Image: Nicola King)
Taken on ‘one of those mornings’ we’re so fortunate to be able to witness. I just love to jump out of bed early and go mist hunting.
Taken January 2022 at the base of Thorpe Cloud.

Swaledale ewes near Derwent Edge (Image: Ruth Downing)
This photograph shows a group of Swaledale ewes in heather with a view of Derwent Edge on the left, looking down Ladybower Reservoir towards the Hope Valley. This image is so special to me as it is something I had wanted to capture for several years but needed the heather, light and weather conditions to all come together to achieve it.

Padley Gorge (Image: Peaklass)
I took this on a quiet, misty, midsummer morning in Padley Gorge. The air was so fresh and clean, you could almost reach out and touch it. Those magnificent, twisted oaks were full of life, the brook splashing over the rocks, and my little part of the world, for that moment, felt as perfect as it could possibly be.

Breedon Hope Cement Works (Image: Wesley Kristopher)
Breedon Hope Cement Works waking beneath a pastel Hope Valley sunrise rising through the morning mist while sheep graze peacefully on the hillside above. Industry and nature have shared the Peak District skyline for generations.

Dovedale Valley farmhouse (Image: William Hickie)
A beautiful farmhouse along the tops of Dovedale Valley which makes an excellent subject for a sunrise. I love this photograph mainly because of the lighting – when the sky lights up like this, it is the best!.
