A monumental achievement

Tetbury-based photographer Maria Stengard-Green has been given the unique opportunity to photograph Gloucester Cathedral for its online 360-degree tour

Gloucester Cathedral is a hugely important building, being one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in the country, with over 900 years of memories held within its stone walls and reflected in the glorious stained glass windows.

Unfortunately, most people won’t have the joy of seeing the Cathedral ‘in the flesh’, of feeling the exhilaration of tilting ones head back and taking in the breathtaking scale and beauty of its architecture. Photographer Maria Stengard-Green has brought us the next best thing though: a virtual tour of the building, allowing you to ‘walk’ along the nave and look up to the heavens as if really there.

As a ‘Trusted Photographer’ for Google, Swedish-born Maria (now living in Tetbury) has undergone intensive training and invested in specialist equipment, such as extreme fisheye lenses and a rotating camera turret. Her years of experience as a professional photographer, specialising in architectural, equine and fine art photography, has led to her Google accreditation in the Cotswolds and this, her biggest project to date.

“Part of the Google initiative is to bring people into the Cotswolds, and the privilege to be able to photograph the Cathedral is absolutely tremendous,” she says. “A building of such groundbreaking importance deserves global attention, and if this brings more people in, then that’s wonderful. It really is very humbling.”
