Robert Largan won the seat for the High Peak in the 2019 general election.

Robert Largan, aged 32, is one of 140 new members of Parliament, having won – by a margin of 590 votes – the key marginal seat of High Peak that Labour won at the previous general election.

He grew up in nearby Manchester, and attended his local comprehensive school. Robert’s first job was working as a fishmonger to help pay for his tuition at Manchester University – ‘I think I’m one of the only MPs who knows how to top and tail a fish,’ he remarks – and he went on to carve out a successful career in finance. Following his election Robert said: ‘I am very aware that this result was incredibly close but throughout the campaign I repeatedly said that I am an independent-minded moderate and will always put the High Peak ahead of party politics.’

Where do you live in your constituency?

Glossop. Despite Glossop being the largest town in the constituency, I’m the first MP to live there since 1929.

What do you like about where you live?

High Peak has it all. Buxton is a beautiful spa town; Glossop is a unique ex-mill town; and we have picture postcard villages like Edale and Castleton. You can go for a walk in the stunning Peak District in the morning and then hop on a train to Manchester – it’s only half an hour away – before coming back to watch a show at Buxton Opera House in the evening. What also makes this area are the people. Take my next door neighbour: she bakes me cakes. I love it here. People really look out for each other. When my hairdresser Andre had his salon closed due to water damage, another Glossop salon put him up so he could keep the business going while repairs were taking place.

What are the pressing issues in your constituency?

Governments of all parties have failed to invest in our transport infrastructure over many decades. We badly need that investment now. We need to build the Mottram Bypass and deliver the long planned Hope Valley line investment to increase capacity on the line. We need longer, more modern and more frequent trains. I’m also focused on supporting our high streets and small businesses.

Is there work you do as an MP that your constituents might not know about?

In the 14 months when I was the prospective parliamentary candidate, my campaign team and I knocked on over 35,000 doors. I’m still knocking on doors now I’m elected. I am determined to be the most accessible MP in the history of High Peak.

What would you highlight as a particular achievement in your constituency?

The amazing work of the emergency services, local businesses and the whole community who pulled together during the Toddbrook Reservoir incident, showing the absolute best of High Peak.

How do you like to relax when you’re at home?

I am a keen fell walker. I also love to cook, which I find very relaxing. Apart from that, I enjoy visiting our many brilliant local pubs.

Favourite place in the constituency?

There are so many walks that I’m spoilt for choice. All have their charms but I think my favourite is Lantern Pike, for the stunning views.

Favourite place to eat?

The Beehive in Glossop. Best Thai food for miles around.

Any personal or political hopes for 2020?

To be the best possible MP for High Peak and make my constituency an even better place to live, work and play. I’ve lost count of the number of people who told me I was the first Conservative they have ever voted for and I am determined to work round the clock to repay the trust people have put in me.
