Buttermere is one of the most popular places to visit in the Lake District and for very good reasons; it is often a base for visitors to explore the fantastic walking landscape in this area.
Many photographers climb the summit of Fleetwith Pike to get a view of Buttermere from its southern edge and also they almost always capture a second body of water in the background.
That ‘photobombing’ lake is called Crummock Water and is often overlooked by its more famous sister to the south. It is actually slightly larger than Buttermere and if you reached the village by going through the Honister Pass, you only need to continue on the same road to reach it, the road is virtually on the side of the lake with the slope of Mellbreak on the other side.
The famous Scale Force waterfall is also nearby and feeds into this lake, which is the source of the River Cocker which meanders north to Cockermouth where it meets the Derwent.
