Award-winning artist Kate Bentley enjoys the element of surprise when she sets up on location. The atmospheric picture above, looking across Morecambe Bay from Hest Bank, is a fine example of her expressionistic work.

‘I usually take five or six pre-prepared papers to work on outside which have a variety of textures and interesting effects produced on them. I then make the painting fit the mood and textures of the random marks found in them,’ said Kate.

It’s a liberating way of working which has paid dividends. Since becoming a professional painter 14 years ago, working mainly in oils and watercolour, Kate has been awarded membership to the The Lakes Artists’ Society and the Birmingham Watercolour Society. She has exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Birmingham Society of Arts, Affordable Art Fair and The Royal Institute.

She was bought up in Morecambe and Arnside and, after studying sculpture and theatre design, she returned to the area to raise her family. Her latest honour was to be awarded associate membership to the prestigious Society of Women Artists in London.

Working out of her studio at Holme Mills, near Milnthorpe, she runs courses and demonstrates throughout the country for art societies, private clients, holiday companies and cruise liners. Her works sell from £100 to £4,000.
