Nestling in the Top Locks conservation area on the Rufford Spur of the Leeds-Liverpool canal, The Ship at Lathom has a colourful history.
Beginning life as a terraced cottage - once used as a smugglers den, this chocolate-box building has evolved over the years, expanding into two adjacent cottages. Three years ago two local couples joined forces to rescue the iconic but dilapidated pub and transform it into the beautiful country pub, restaurant and canal-side beer garden we see today. Stepping inside The Ship, the evidence of its heritage can still be found.
There are two cosy cottage areas - one of which features it’s original Yorkshire range, a central bar with fireside and window tables, semi-private dining in The Library, a light and airy Country
Room and a walker/dog friendly Boot Room. There are log fires, wooden and slate floors, exposed beams and brickwork throughout; complementary colours and log burners adding a contemporary feel whilst enhancing the traditional atmosphere.
The mouthwatering food reflects this marriage of the traditional and contemporary. Always supplemented by inventive seasonal and market specials, the menu offers The Ship’s
famous fish and chips, home made pies and gourmet burgers amongst it’s most popular staples, with a great choice of meat, fish, fowl and vegetarian dishes - including vegan options. Many of which are available in light or large portions.
All the food is freshly prepared, largely locally sourced and based on the finest Lancashire ingredients. In it’s green and pleasant setting, this former smugglers cottage has come a long way.
