Homes without a security system are 2.7 to 3.5 times more likely to be subject to burglary, according to the Greenwich Study of Residential Security report. So, how can you ensure your home is protected against unwanted visitors?

After serving in the military; working in the commercial security market for a combined period of 35 years; travelling internationally and around the UK to secure the offices and residential premises, assets and personnel of leading companies; and taking his expertise to hostile environments to safeguard major oil and gas companies/assets, Des Steel and his team are well-placed to help people in the UK protect their properties.

Q: What security measures can be put in place at home to prevent intruders?

A: Your home security should be based on the level of threat in the area you live and your personal safety concerns.

Although no amount of security can guarantee complete safety, an effective system could prevent, deter and delay an intrusion.

When configuring a security system, start from the entrance of the property – lights and sensors can be installed on the ground leading up to the house (even laser beams if desired).

CCTV cameras must be fitted with night vision – these could be covertly hidden, or installed in plain sight to deter potential intruders.

Windows and doors should be properly locked when not in use, and sensors can be added.

If you are particularly worried, safe rooms with panic buttons can also be incorporated.

Q: Do I need a permit for a home security system?

A: You can install as many cameras and safety measures as you wish without a permit, as long as they are not affecting your neighbours. The company supplying and installing your system should understand the guidelines and abide by them.

Q: Do I really need a security system?

A: No-one wants to have their home broken into and their possessions stolen. Many people are unaware of the risks, but you can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of your home and your family.
