A Cumbrian market town has been named one of the most walkable in England.

Word Atlas has released a list of the seven towns with the most walkable town centres in England.

The list featured a range of towns from the Northumberland coastline all the way down to the Sussex marshes.

Keswick in the Lake District made it onto the list thanks to its proximity to Derwentwater and its many attractions.

What is Keswick like?

On the market town, World Atlas said: “Keswick sits at the north end of Derwentwater, and the lake is a 10-minute walk from Market Square down Lake Road, through Hope Park.

“Back in the center, the market has operated on Main Street since a charter of 1276.

“On the way down to the water, Theatre by the Lake stands between the square and the shore and runs productions in repertory year-round in a 400-seat main house and a 100-seat studio.

“Nearby, Keswick Museum in Fitz Park covers geology, Lakeland life, literature, and the metalwork of the Keswick School of Industrial Arts.

“For a unique landmark, a 6.4-kilometre (four-mile) round walk from Market Square reaches Castlerigg Stone Circle, 38 stones in an open field ringed by fells.”

There are several walks around Keswick and its surrounding area that you can go on.

Whether you want to take a walk around Derwentwater or want to explore Calf Close Bay, you should be able to find a walk that suits you.

If you prefer to cycle around the area, you can follow the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path, which features a smooth tarmac trail that takes you through the countryside.

If you want to stay in the town and walk around, there are plenty of things to see and do, including visiting a few different pubs in Keswick.

You can stop off at the Dog & Gun, the Wainwright Pub or the Lake Road Inn.

For a spot of brunch, you can visit the Honey Pot, a friendly tea room offering hot drinks and fresh fruit scones.

Across the River Greta, you can find the Keswick Museum, which features exhibitions and family activities all about life in Keswick and its surrounding area.

The museum is also home to Fitz Park, which has its own playground and is a nice place to spend some time outdoors.
