A "ravishingly rugged" trail in Cornwall has been named among the best winter walks in the UK with a pub stop at the end.

The route around the Lizard Peninsula was featured alongside 10 others in an article from The Telegraph.

Discussing the creation of the list, the publication wrote: "With increasing numbers of Britons embracing hill walking, winter is definitely the time to hike, especially with parts of the UK enjoying a mild February forecast.

"At this time of year, you’re more likely to get footpaths to yourself, for one, and while lacking the lushness of other seasons, winter has a special beauty: skeleton trees, exposed landforms, murmuring birds, frost shimmer, woodsmoke, a calming sense of nature at rest.

"Also, a walk is a good counterbalance to the excesses of the festive season and the urge to hibernate. It’s rare you don’t feel better – in body and mind – after a brisk, cheek-rosying yomp. Especially if there happens to be a good pub you can eat, drink and hunker down in at the end…"

Why is the Lizard Peninsula trail among the UK's best winter walks with a pub stop?

The Lizard Peninsula trail begins and ends at The Top House Inn, is four miles (6.5km) long and should take around two hours to complete.

The Telegraph wrote: "If ever there was a walk to blow about the cobwebs, this is it: a little loop of the British mainland’s southernmost extremity, sea air blasting all round."

The Top House Inn was commended as a "wonderfully atmospheric spot" where you can enjoy a well-earned pint after completing the trail.

It added: "Grab sustenance from Anne’s Famous Pasty Shop then set out for implausibly cute Church Cove, to meet the sea.

"Then it’s a case of following the South West Coast Path, striding clockwise around this ravishingly rugged peninsula, passing high cliffs, a lonely lighthouse, the Marconi museum (sadly closed in winter) and views to Land’s End.

"Also look out for seals in the waves, choughs on the breeze."

Describing its difficulty it says: "This path is fairly level, with a few short climbs and rougher sections.

"There is a network of paths radiating like spokes between the village and the Coast Path, so it is easy to make this walk shorter or longer if you wish."

In terms of getting to the start point, you can park at the Lizard Village Green and Lizard Point (TR12 7NQ) or get the bus from Helston.
