Island farming
An exciting new chapter is underway on Tresco, as the island farm is being brought back to life by farming duo Ruth and Graham Eggins. Having farmed Hillside Farm on Bryher for several years, the pair were ready for a new challenge and have ambitious plans to reinvigorate the farm.
From starting a new market garden with no-dig beds to inspiring the local island children to get stuck into growing produce, they are passionate about creating a diverse and thriving farm.
They’re also finding creative ways to transform island ‘waste’ into valuable resources. For example, they’re using old shipping ropes from Scillonian III to hold pest nets down and cricket ground grass cuttings as nutrient-rich matter for beds. They are even in the process of creating their own homegrown fertiliser from foraged seaweed, crab/lobster shells and rainwater, thanks to a new island composter that can travel around the island collecting materials.
The pair are truly getting stuck into what they like to call ‘common sense farming’ – a low impact, gentle way of managing the 160 acres – and the wider Tresco land management team hopes that the island can be more self-sufficient in the years to come. After just a few months, the market garden is already providing salad and eggs to guests via Tresco Stores and the team hopes to be serving Tresco-bred Red Devon beef at The New Inn by the end of the season.
