From mermaid swimming lessons to Halloween themed fun, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained this October half term. We have assembled 9 of the best events happening in Cornwall from October 22 to October 30
Mermaid swimming lessons, Newquay
Ever wanted to know what it was like to be Ariel in The Little Mermaid; to elegantly glide through the water and swim with a tail? Enjoying mermaid swimming lessons in Newquay offers you the chance to find out! This is the only place where you will have an AIDA accredited free diving instructor by your side to teach you the ways of the waters with special swimming techniques and poses.
There are a range of courses with room to develop, starting at a beginners one-day course to a four-day course in which you go through all of the levels and dive deeper to advance your skills. Savour the memory with a professional photograph of your mermaid days on completion of your course. For those who are interested, it is asked that you are 16 and over and are a confident swimmer.
The Silent Disco, the Esplanade Hotel, Newquay
The Esplanade is a modern hotel that offers beautiful sea views of Fistral Beach and will be hosting an event schedule this October half term brimming with activities to keep the kids entertained. At the silent disco children can really lose themselves in the moment with their wireless headphones hugging their heads and let their inner diva out; even better still is that the music won’t irritate parents who have a dislike for modern pop! Head to the Ocean View’ restaurant and Pebbles’ bar for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks after all that dancing. Find Fistral beach within minutes of the hotel or the golf course where you can spend hours potting holes.
If this is something that sounds appealing to you and your family, get booking as there are a limited amount of spaces; you don’t even have to be staying at the Esplanade to enjoy this event.
Spooky Spectacular, Eden Project
This St Austells gem has a range of things to offer this half term; with their Little Monsters Ball’ on October 29 where children can get all dressed up to let themselves dance into the night with two dance floors and cheesy pop tunes.
An older audience can enjoy some thrilling fire acrobatics while the children make some new friends with amazing owls the Screech Owl Sanctuary’ have kindly brought along. It doesn’t just stop there; they also have creepy crawlies to spook visitors this Halloween including tarantulas, spiders, scorpions and many more. The Eden Project are also going to put on a delicious but scary spread: expect monster ribs, roasted bat wings and even some creepy coleslaw.
Rogue Theatre, Tehidy Woods, Near Portreath
With three shows a day over the October half term, you can choose the one that is most suited to you; if you are a bit squeamish then it is recommended that you go to the earlier showings. There will be a range of both soft and alcoholic drinks on sale, so all you need to bring is blankets, a pair of wellies (if muddy) and wrap up warm while you enjoy your spooktastic night, full of dance, circus acts and ghost stories.
Looe’s Monkey Sanctuary is run by the Wild Futures charity, established for over five decades, they are dedicated to the welfare and safety of monkeys. In half term the sanctuary are running Halloween activities from October 24 and October 30 between 11am and 4pm including face painting, treasure hunts, spooky treats and even a tour of the monkey enclosure.
Halloween masked ball at Flambards, Helston
On October 26, from 6pm to 6am, Flamabards’ Halloween masked ball is the perfect excuse to get dressed up and dance like no one’s watching. With artists like the Metric, Hugh Hardie, Ghost Culture, Felix Dickson and many more you are guaranteed to have a fun night you’ll never forget!
A Halloween event with free gifts is enough to grab our attention! Children are able to take home a free pumpkin or carve it at Camel Creek. Children in fancy dress may even win a prize! The Camel Creek hosts multiple Halloween themed activities; from scare zones where you can really test your fears to magic shows that will exceed your expectations, a Grim Reaper ghost train that’s bound to spook you and a witch’s grotto where you will experience potions being created firsthand.
For a day filled with pumpkins, head to the beautiful Trengwaiton garden on October 23 where you will find activities such as pumpkin skittles, a pumpkin shy, pumpkin tastings and carvings. From October 24 to October 27, from 11am to 4pm, expect apple bobbing games and a chance to make your own toffee apples using Trengwainton’s own apples. Also, don’t miss spooky storytelling from the local troubadour Mark Harandon.
The stunning Tudor estate of Cotehole is full of halloween spirit, with events running from October 24 to 27 between 11am and 3pm everyday at the quay. Enjoy events such as monster and mask making, pumpkin carving and much more to entertain the whole family. On Saturday there will be a fright night’, a family event running from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, which is a self-guided tour through Cotehole House where the only light will be brought by you.
