A "stunning" walking route in Sussex has been named among the best in the country to try.

The King Charles III England Coast Path, commonly known as the England Coast Path, opened earlier this year.

It follows the coastline of England, extending across a huge 2,689 miles.

Part of it goes through Sussex, and one specific route has been picked out by experts as a route worth trying.

The Guardian rounded up five of the best routes to try on the new coastal path, including "less trodden sections big on scenery and history".

Making the list was the route around Chichester harbour, Hampshire, and West Sussex.

The 35-mile stretch of coastal path runs through Chichester Harbour from South Hayling in Hampshire to East Head in West Sussex.

It opened in February and gives walkers access to a stretch of coastline rich in wildlife, passing through salt marshes, mudflats, and villages.

A stretch of the coastal path from Eastbourne to Rye was previously opened in December 2024, following 40 miles between East Head and Shoreham that opened in October 2023.

The Guardian highlighted how the route offers "wild, windswept wetlands stretch to the horizon", as well as church spires and thatched roofs.

Expert Rachel Dixon noted that they began in Prinsted, before heading east around Chidham peninsula.

She wrote: "Tens of thousands of wading birds and waterfowl spend the winter here, and in summer it’s a breeding ground for threatened species of seabirds and waders.

"Early April may not be peak time for birdwatching, but we still see a plethora of gulls and ducks, plus oystercatchers, curlews and a kestrel."

After rounding the peninsula, they reached the pretty village of Bosham, where they enjoyed stops at Berkeley Arms and Anchor Bleu.

After an overnight stay, a walk along the harbour was enjoyed, before enjoying a trip on the Itchenor Ferry.

After disembarking at West Itchenor and stopping for coffee and cake at the Quarterdeck Cafe, a six-mile shoreline stroll to the dunes at East Head spit, and the adjacent sandy beach at West Wittering ended the route.

Things to do in Bosham

If you also decide to take on the coastal path in Sussex and hit Bosham, there is so much to do in the beautiful village.

Bosham has earned plenty of praise over the years, having already been named one of the prettiest villages in the UK for a spring weekend break.

Last year, Bosham was also highlighted by experts at Independent Cottages as being one of England's best 'chocolate box' villages.

The phrase refers to images of the beautiful cottages that used to front the iconic Cadbury’s boxes.

If you are visiting the village, it is packed with things to do, with the Bosham to Itchenor ferry trip and other boat trips to see the harbour’s resident seals being among the best.

Bosham is famed for its sailing and becomes a "hive of activity" in warmer months, providing mooring for countless boats and yachts.

There is also dinghy sailing and sailing courses for children available most of the year.

Bosham has historical spots to explore, from its Roman buildings in the northern area of the village to the village church.

For places to eat, there are two pubs in Bosham, The Anchor Bleu and The Bosham Inn, as well as Marwick's Brasserie in The Millstream Hotel, and the Sea School Restaurant.

There are also plenty of good coffee and ice cream spots in the village.
