7 walks near the Sandstone Trail

A selection of walks centred around the route of the Sandstone Trail in Cheshire.

The Sandstone Trail is the finest longer walk in the county and an absolute must for anyone interested in the art of pedestrianism. It runs north to south from Frodsham to Whitchurch in Shropshire, a distance of 34 miles that can be covered quite easily in three days. If you simply don't have the time or even the inclination to take the full trail, you can still explore this beautiful part of Cheshire with this series of much shorter walks.

Frodsham and Woodhouse Hill
This walk starts out from Frodsham and follows part of the Sandstone Trail, taking in Woodhouse Hill and Overton Hill.

Helsby Hill
This walk briefly follows the trail for a kilometre or so through Snidley Moor Wood, but also visits the top of Helsby Hill, so you can enjoy the fantastic views as well.

Mouldsworth and Manley Common
The Eddisbury Way runs from Frodsham to Burwardsley in the Peckforton Hills and is 17 miles in length, well way-marked and a decent challenge for when the days are longer. The Sandstone Trail traverses this area too and we meet it for part of the walk.

Kelsall and Willington
Kelsall village nestles below the sandstone ridge that runs north to south from Frodsham to Beeston. The Sandstone Trail runs along this ridge but doesn't touch Kelsall itself, sticking to the higher ground.

Tarporley
Tarporley is at about the half-way point of the 34 miles of the Sandstone Trail between Frodsham and Whitchurch, this walk is based around the village.

Whitchurch and the Shropshire Union Canal
The Sandstone Trail ends (or begins) in Whitchurch depending on which way you look at it. This walk takes in the Shropshire Union Canal which also runs into Cheshire.
